Some time ago, I moved to De Pijp, Amsterdam, and was surprised by the amount of furniture and other items people leave on the street each week. This is how the bulky waste collection works in Amsterdam.
I picked up some furniture and other items myself, and they’re still part of my apartment decor—I’m quite happy with them!
However, I can’t collect everything on my own, so I began taking photos of items left on the street and posting them on Instagram.
Initially, it was a De Pijp-only account — @stooping_de_pijp.
It quickly became clear that Instagram wasn’t the best platform for sharing locations. You can’t copy addresses from photo descriptions, and sometimes it’s hard to identify the exact location while taking the photo.
So, I created a simple website with a map where I could upload photos, automatically adding them to their locations on the map, then reposting them on Instagram.
After a while, people started messaging me asking, “Why only De Pijp?”
So, I launched a new Instagram account, @stoopingmap, to cover all of Amsterdam.
My goal is to help people find good-quality furniture before the bulky waste trucks come to collect it, so it can be reused instead of being crushed, burned, or sent to a landfill.
I want to make it easy for people to find free, quality furniture for their homes.
I aim to reduce waste and support environmental sustainability.
My hope is that this project becomes the go-to place for people to share items they want to give away, without the hassle of selling them on Marktplaats.
The best way to support this project is to share it with your friends.
The more people know about it and use it, the more items are added to the map, helping others discover great finds.
